These tests will not confirm you have a diagnosis of autism but can be a helpful guide to support your decision on whether to get yourself assessed or not.

Diagnostic Process

If you are looking to go through the NHS for a diagnosis, here is how the process would work:

  1. For adults, you would first speak to your GP about it and they will refer you to an autism specialist for an assessment. Unfortunately, there is usually a long waitlist for this (you may wait for up to 2 years before an appointment, it may be longer in some areas of the UK). In some cases, a GP may be reluctant to refer you or struggle or may refute your concerns and it would be better to get a second opinion from another GP. Some GPs still believe that autism can only be diagnosed in children, which is obviously not the case.

  2. For children, a SENCO, pediatrician or GP will be able to refer your child for an assessment with an autism specialist. There also may be a long waitlist of up to 3 years.

If you are looking to go through the private sector for a diagnosis, here is how the process would work:

  1. For adults: there are many private practices in the UK that can provide assessments. I have provided links for a few of them here. Most practices can be contacted via email and they will then refer you to one of their specialists. The waitlist is a lot shorter than the NHS but it may depend on which area of the country you are in.

  2. For children: the process is similar to adults, however you may have more than one professional involved in the the diagnosis of your child (e.g.: a psychologist, a speech and language therapist or an occupational therapist)
